Dave Shortt is the owner and founder of Shortt and Epic. Previously, Dave was Creative Director for San Francisco-based B’stro and Vancouver-owned fix8, Design and Branding Agencies. He received an Honours degree in Communications with a Minor in Film from Queen’s University.

Standing at 6’3”, Dave Shortt became frustrated by his last name.  And while he appreciates an oxymoron as much as the next guy, he had heard “You’re last name’s Shortt? but you’re so tall!” one too many times.

All this changed when he founded Shortt and Epic Productions. With passions for film and storytelling, suddenly his name took on new meaning - Shortt to the length of the videos and Epic to creative, cinematic videos. With years of education, hard work, and creative design, Dave now is following his love of the art of video production with Shortt and Epic Productions.


If you’ve seen the “Christy Crunch” ad or “Don’t Quit Your Gay Job”, you’re already familiar with Brent J. Rubin’s work. Brent J. Rubin moved to Vancouver, BC from Saskatchewan to attend the Vancouver Film School – Canada’s premier post-secondary entertainment arts institution and one of the most distinguished in the world.

At VFS, Brent developed the deep knowledge and passion for a career as an Editor. Brent has a long list of television and web-based shows, music videos, and feature films that he is proud to have worked on. He brings excitement for his craft and years of experience to every project. We’re lucky to have him on our team.

Director / DOP

Dan Rocque is the jack-of-all-trades at Shortt and Epic. From producing to cinematography, Dan not only applies his film production skill-set and creative thinking to meet the demands of any project – but loves to exceed a client’s expectations while being mindful of budget.

Since graduating from Vancouver Film School in 2005, Dan has been working predominately as a freelance DOP in Vancouver and Toronto. He balances his contract work with feature length scriptwriting, directing and editing short form narratives, and writing and producing independent music.



You have a great story to tell, but it’s a big universe out there and most know little of your distant planet.  Which is unfortunate, because yours is a world like no other. 

Our mission is to deliver your message to clients using video – second only to mathematics as the most commonly understood  lexicon of the universe. Videos are unique because they can be used to tell stories. Stories are powerful and connect with audiences on an emotional level – the place where memories are made.

We’ll work with you to find the story you want to tell and the one your audience wants to hear – which is key – given that in our reality, the universe revolves around them. We’ll come up with the best approach, be it live action, animation, or timelapse or a combination thereof. Whatever it takes to get your story across.

We believe video is an indispensable part of any marketing mix. Video is what we’re great at. Without it we’d have to resort to cheesey space metaphors to get our messages across. Thank goodness for video.

We’ve created videos that have gone viral, but you’ll never hear us say ‘We’re going to create a viral video’. We’re happy when it happens, but it’s not where we put our creative focus. Nor should it be.

Our focus is on creating videos that are compelling. We believe people should get something out of a video. Be it a beautiful moment, a laugh, a tear, or learning something new. 

This means we’re motivated to create experiences, not commercials. There are numerous examples of viral videos that are in fact commercials, but none of them are successful because they are commercials.

Audiences are smart, sensitive, and discerning. We create videos with this in mind. In fact, not every video needs to go viral, but every video needs to connect to your audience. And that is something we can promise.
