DAVE SHORTT
Founder / Creative Director

Dave Shortt is founder and owner of Shortt and Epic. 

He completed his Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Film Studies from Queen’s University. In 2002 he founded fix8 Media, a successful interactive agency and was later invited to be Creative Director at B’stro, a San Francisco based advertising firm. 

 In 2011, Dave Shortt pursued his passions and talents in film and founded Shortt and Epic. With over 12 years of experience as Creative Director, he has a long history collaborating with a wide range of companies and organizations, from Fortune 500s to startups and not-for-profits, and has won several awards, including a Golden City Gate Award for his Travel Alberta work.

MICHAELA BAER 
Producer/Project Manager

Michaela is Shortt and Epic’s Producer and Project Manager. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the Emily Carr University of Art + Design.

With a background working in copywriting and online media with non-profit organizations and small businesses, Michaela combines her passion for communications, technology and art in her approach to video production and project management.

Without knowing it, it is quite likely that you’re already familiar with Brent J. Rubin’s work. From TV commercials to reality shows, Brent has edited over two hundred television and web-based videos. 

Brent attended the Vancouver Film School (graduating year 2005) – Canada’s premier post-secondary entertainment arts institution and one of the most distinguished in the world. At the Vancouver Film School, he developed the deep knowledge and passion for a career as an Editor and brings excitement for his craft and a keen eye for perfection to every project.

 

OUR APPROACH

You have a great story to tell, but it’s a big universe out there and most know little of your distant planet.  Which is unfortunate, because yours is a world like no other. 

Our mission is to deliver your message to clients using video – second only to mathematics as the most commonly understood  lexicon of the universe. Videos are unique because they can be used to tell stories. Stories are powerful and connect with audiences on an emotional level – the place where memories are made.

We’ll work with you to find the story you want to tell and the one your audience wants to hear – which is key – given that in our reality, the universe revolves around them. We’ll come up with the best approach, be it live action, animation, or timelapse or a combination thereof. Whatever it takes to get your story across.

We believe video is an indispensable part of any marketing mix. Video is what we’re great at. Without it we’d have to resort to cheesey space metaphors to get our messages across. Thank goodness for video.

We’ve created videos that have gone viral, but you’ll never hear us say ‘We’re going to create a viral video’. We’re happy when it happens, but it’s not where we put our creative focus. Nor should it be.

Our focus is on creating videos that are compelling. We believe people should get something out of a video. Be it a beautiful moment, a laugh, a tear, or learning something new. 

This means we’re motivated to create experiences, not commercials. There are numerous examples of viral videos that are in fact commercials, but none of them are successful because they are commercials.

Audiences are smart, sensitive, and discerning. We create videos with this in mind. In fact, not every video needs to go viral, but every video needs to connect to your audience. And that is something we can promise.
